Swartz's Susan Chwan asked Barb and Dan to complete the on-line questionnaire before their first design meeting. Then Susan listened and asked questions as Barb described how she and her family used their kitchen.

Barb longed for the 'coveted' kitchen work triangle (stove-sink-
refrigerator). The kitchen table served as a prep counter and work area. Increased storage and organization were high priorities as was the preservation of natural light.

After measuring the space and listening to the Hendersons describe both what they wanted and didn't want in a kitchen, Susan shared some ideas.

"I suggested removing the walls at either end of the kitchen to open it up," recalls Susan. "Barb initially wanted to keep it as a separate room. She was especially concerned about viewing a sink full of dirty dishes from the dining room."

Susan also suggested eliminating one window to increase cabinet space. Additional light would come from the dining room she explained.

Barb had time to consider the dramatic changes before their next meeting. She was confident that Susan was being receptive to her concerns.

The proof would be in the design.
